چکیده

Objectives At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to: 1. Name the principal neurotransmitters thought to be important for eye movement control. 2. Cite side effects of medications commonly used to treat nystagmus, including gabapentin, baclofen and clonazepam, and types of nystagmus they have been shown to benefit. 3. Identify three nystagmus-causing conditions for which disease-specific therapy is available. 4. Explain the uses and limitations of prisms and optical image stabilization systems in the treatment of nystagmus. 5. Describe the benefits and risks of botulinum toxin injections and eye muscle surgery in patients with congenital and acquired nystagmus.

Nystagmus and Other Ocular Motor Oscillations and Intrusions

If one is to understand the pathophysiology of ocular oscillations it is imperative to distinguish between those involving only the slow system and those that are purely saccadic. Oscillations containing both saccades and slow phases require identification of the causative phase (i.e., that which takes the eyes away from their intended direction) and the corrective phase. Modem methods of recor...

Diagnostic value of nystagmus: spontaneous and induced ocular oscillations.

Research over the past 20 years has provided a clearer understanding of the pathogenesis of most forms of nystagmus and other ocular oscillations. To the clinician, these advances translate into greater accuracy of nystagmus as a diagnostic sign. However, to capitalise on these advances, it is important to systematically examine eye movements and interpret the findings with reference to pathoph...

Incidence and characteristics of voluntary nystagmus.

A survey of a college age population revealed that 8% could produce voluntary nystagmus. Seventy-nine per cent of this sample had relatives who could also produce it. A systematic investigation of the characteristics of voluntary nystagmus under a number of stimulus conditions showed that it resembles pendular nystagmus in waveform, and certain ocular oscillations, such as ocular flutter and op...

Nystagmus and Related Ocular Motility Disorders

General Concepts and Clinical Approach This chapter concerns abnormal eye movements that disrupt steady fixation and thereby degrade vision. We now know a good deal about the normal anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology of ocular motor control (1). Our approach is to apply this knowledge to nystagmus and other ocular oscillations, since pathophysiology provides a sounder conceptual framework th...
